About the project
I was a product designer on Redfin's Transaction Efficiency Engineering (TEE) team, creating software tools to help Redfin’s agents and coordinators close transactions more efficiently. The team owns products to help track all the emails, documents, and tasks necessary to finalize a real estate transaction.
I worked closely with a product manager, UX researcher, and engineering team manager. I also gained valuable feedback by presenting my work through various phases of the project to other design and product stakeholders.
Background
In the closing process of a property deal, Redfin handles many documents for a customer - like offers, purchase and sale agreements, and affiliated business disclosures.
Each housing market has its own set of buy-side and sell-side templates to tell Transaction Coordinators and Agents which documents are required for a deal. It’s crucial that Redfin has the right set of documents in their internal Agent Tools to ensure that the deal closes smoothly and that there’s a clear audit trail after the deal closes.
The Problem
The existing version of this feature was dated and implemented in legacy code. There were a couple of pain points that were documented with this - it’s slow, difficult to read, and not compatible with newer document features. So I was tasked with redesigning the feature within an existing part of Redfin’s Agent tools, using the updated design system.
Persona
Process
This is the design thinking process I followed & the actions I took in each phase. As many designers can attest, the process was iterated and went back to different stages before the feature was ready for development.

Reflection
Working on Document Template editing was an eye-opening opportunity for me to learn the ropes of designing enterprise software from end-to-end.
As a designer this was my first role working with an extensive design system, leading user research calls on my own, learning how to present my work to stakeholders, and many more experiences that helped accelerate my growth as a product designer. I really appreciated feedback-oriented design culture at Redfin, and became more comfortable with not only voicing my opinions and defending design choices, but also being receptive to other perspectives.
This feature launched in Q4 of 2021 ahead of target dates and accelerated the transition of Redfin enterprise tooling to upgrade to the newer framework and the team was able to deprecate the legacy tooling.
